I know nothing about the risks that are involved with him going overseas, and how China runs their government, and what that means for him..any thoughts? I mean financially, we will be taken care of, he’ll be in a 4 star hotel and such…and it is for the US Embassy..they can guarantee safety right? I know nothing is 100%, but..it is the US Embassy… I just have no knowledge at all about this matter. What about bird flu? and sars?…the government? It will be located in Beijing, China.

Is China is being too cautious about Olympic security re: news media demands for complete access to the games?

Owl_08 asked:

In light of the current news & reminder about the late great sportcaster McKay’s reporting of the Munich Olympics where 9 Israeli athletes were killed by terrorists from the Middle East, I do not think that China is going overboard about their security concerns for news reporters & outsiders visiting their country in 2008. China is very close to Pakistan, supposedly where Osama bin Laden and his Al-Qaida recruits are hiding out if Osama is not on some ship and sailing around the world. The history of China’s repression in Tianenmen Square & the Cultural Revolution are in the past but the rioting in Tibet is not. No one wants people to go hungry, homeless, jobless, and without education. So I am sure China does not want to have anything ruin the games for everyone participating. War is the ultimate sport, & unfortunately, terrorists do not honor and respect the ideals of the Olympics athletes. The Olympics are all about peace & sharing the world, aren’t they?

PAKISTAN HELPING TALIBAN INSURGENTS
KABUL, Afghanistan - Pakistani intelligence agents and paramilitary forces have helped train Taliban insurgents and have given them information about American troop movements in Afghanistan, said a report published Monday by a U.S. think tank.

The study by the RAND Corp. also warned that the U.S. will face “crippling, long-term consequences” in Afghanistan if Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistan are not eliminated.

It echoes recent statements by American generals, who have increased their warnings that militant safe havens in Pakistan are threatening efforts in Afghanistan. The study was funded by the U.S. Defense Department.

I knew a CIA agent that lived in China many years ago. He was an antiques and art dealer, and that was his cover. Does the USA Defense Department have information about how safe it is for the Olympics to be held in China?
Please note: I should have separated my statement and question about China’s security for the 2008 Olympics from an excerpt by JASON STRAZIUSO, AP Writer in my first set of “Details”. My concern is that there are possibly Taliban or Al-Quaida “sleepers” from terrorists cells posing as ordinary citizens and tourists in China because of the Olympics games. If you recall, this happened in the USA prior to 9 -11. Your reminding me of the Atlanta games and ‘a lone suicide bomber’ which was indeed frightening & obviously unexpected at the time is most gratefully appreciated. China is not asking the USA for help with the security problems they are facing in Beijing. Heaven forbid that there would be another catastrophe in China because of lack of security at the Olympics after the devastating earthquake in Sichuan that has killed so many. It is obvious that the grief for the victims of the earthquake is so overwhelming that is a major concern for the Chinese government.

I am sure we can get the job done cheaper and the chinese at least know how to work for the benefit of their own country.

Maybe we can even get the chinese as part of the deal to forgive a huge chunk of the national debt we owe them.
